Pharmacists are shifting from dispensing to direct patient care

The United States has some of the highest hospitalization rates for ambulatory sensitive conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.

Chronic disease remains a significant concern among Americans, with more than half (51.8%) of the U.S. population experiencing at least one chronic condition and 25% suffering from multiple chronic conditions.

In a recent study conducted by Columbia University, the industry gained insight into the role pharmacists will play as ambulatory infusion therapy and specialty pharmacy continue to evolve. Here are some key points: As the U.S. healthcare system continues to evolve, pharmacists can play a pivotal role by serving as the connection point between primary care gaps, medication management complexities, and value-based model goal attainment. This expanded role will be accelerated by technologies that shift focus to the patient, such as CitusHealth with video and messaging designed to be HIPAA compliant, automated workflows, and greater data connection and interoperability.

Trust is high that pharmacists will be an integral part in patient care, particularly among patients — and to a growing degree among providers.

These pharmacists also recognize the gaps in diagnosing and prescribing, which is why telehealth will likely become a more critical tool. Supportive technologies are creating safer and more efficient ways for pharmacists to get their jobs done — and lead to more time to spend with patients.

“More than 80% of ambulatory clinic and health system respondents indicated a high level of engagement with medical providers to discuss patient needs and medications.”

While pharmacists spend a majority of their time doing traditional activities such as dispensing medications or answering questions about drugs, many in this role also spend time conducting direct patient care. This includes being a first-contact provider or interacting with larger health teams.

“50% or more of pharmacists expect to spend more time administering vaccines, conducting telehealth visits, prescribing medications, counseling patients, or acting as a disease specialist. Ultimately, this will mean less time dispensing and more focus on patient care.”
